Crytek is normally known for shooters with ultra realistic graphics like Warface or Crysis 2, but now the company is stepping onto new grounds with their first mobile game Fibble – Flick ‘n’ Roll for all iOS devices.
We know the German Frankfurt based developers are capable of flexing the graphical muscle of their CryENGINE® on desktops and consoles. Fibble showcases, that their engine also runs high quality 3D on mobile platforms as iPod, iPhone and iPad. But is it an interesting game or merely an extended tech demo?
Fibble – Flick ‘n’ Roll is a level based 3D physic puzzler. You control the extraterrestrial Fibble, who crashed into a household on planet earth. During the crash he got separated from his friends and is now on a search rescue mission throughout the house. You move through the house by completing increasingly difficult challenges in different household environments like the Kitchen or the Kid’s room.
The goal on each map is to get Fibble trough the level with the least flicks possible. To do so you can use the unique powers of Fibble’s alien-friends. It’s fairly simple.
Get a set of aliens and set them on specific points on the map. They are fixed, but you can choose what type of alien you want to use there. There is only one alien combination that makes a gold medal rating possible for each level, however, figuring the combination out it’s not enough. You also have to execute the stunt by flicking and triggering the aliens in the right moment.
Flicking works by swiping over Fibble and letting go. It’s possible to adjust the strength of the flick and the direction, in that way Fibble rolls fairly precise where you want him to go. Accelerators, bumpers and other items are triggered automatically. Aliens-Friends have to be triggered by taping on them when Fibble is in range. In some cases you have to tap again and launch him in the desired direction. Those interactions don’t count as a ‘flicks’ and are the key to a high ratings and scores, that can be compared with other players via the Game Center.
The 3D graphics in Fibble – Flick ‘n’ Roll shows how far mobile devices have come in the last years. Especially the HD version for the iPad is quite impressive from the technical standpoint. As mentioned, the game runs on the CryENGINE® 3 and is capable of displaying smooth animations, dynamic lighting, HDR rendering, camera motion blur and depth of field.
Crytek has chosen a very bright and family friendly art style and shows that high quality 3D graphics are not only reserved for shooters, racers or role-playing games and opposes the approach of EPIC with their Infinity Blade series that until now was the unchallenged king for 3D visuals on mobile devices with their Unreal Engine 3™. Crytek will most certainly soon reveal its mobile update for the CryENGINE® 3 offering other developers the technology to create mobile games with stunning 3D visuals.
After all Crytek succeeds in entering the mobile market with a solid debut. The game is an interesting mix of puzzler and skill test. However it’s not groundbreaking from the game play perspective. What Fibble – Flick ‘n’ Roll does, is showcasing the possibilities for the CryENGINE® 3 on mobile devices and what we see leaves us wanting more.
Fibble – Flick ‘n’ Roll is available in the Apple Appstore for $1.99/1.59€ for iPod and iPhone or for $4.99 / €3.99 on iPad. Crytech also offers a free demo version with access to the first two rooms of the game.
